Could ABB’s world fastest electric car charger be the big breakthrough in EV uptake

On the 30th of September 2021, ABB, the Swiss engineering company, launched the fastest electric car charger in the world to break into the growing e-car market.

Until now charging an electric vehicle required a little more planning but a new, faster technology is changing e-mobility. Public EV charging stations are becoming increasingly widespread as demand and incentives for alternatives to Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) expand. The average time spent on charging an electric car takes from 6 to 12 hours from empty to full.

With governments around the world writing public policy that favors electric vehicles and charging networks to combat climate change, the demand for EV charging infrastructure, especially charging stations that are fast, convenient and easy to operate is higher than ever.

ABB launched Terra 360

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a Swiss engineering company offering a full range of charging and electrification solutions for electric cars, electric and hybrid buses, vans, trucks, ferries, and trains. ABB entered the e-mobility market in 2010 and has since sold over 460,000 electric car chargers in over 88 markets, including over 21,000 DC fast chargers and 440,000 AC chargers through Chargedot.

It’s an exciting day for ABB, who as the global leader in electric vehicle fast charging, is playing a key role in enabling a low carbon society.

Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer at ABB

Last month, finally, ABB designed the ‘world fastest electric car charger’ called Terra 360. With a max total output of 360 kW, it’s undoubtedly one of the most powerful electric vehicle chargers available on the market. It is capable of charging any electric car in 15 minutes. The progress in transportation is fulfilling the needs of a wide range of EV drivers, whether they require a quick charge or want to top up their battery while doing something different.

The Terra 360 charger has a variety of uses. It can be installed on an organization’s commercial premises to charge electric fleet cars, vans, and trucks or to fulfil the needs of private EV drivers at fueling stations, convenience stores, and retail sites. This allows owners to charge up to four vehicles overnight or give EVs a quick charge throughout the day. Terra 360 chargers can be deployed in tiny depots or parking lots with limited space because of their modest footprint.

Terra 360 is designed with EV drivers’ daily requirements and expectations in mind. It will be available in Europe by the end of 2021 and in the United States, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific by 2022. The Terra 360 combines speed and convenience with comfort, ease-of-use, and a sense of familiarity, thanks to the extensive field expertise obtained by ABB E-huge mobility’s installed base. ABB connected chargers enable fast global service and proactive maintenance.

Which electric car charges the quickest?

Electric vehicles are rapidly becoming popular. The owners of electric cars wonder if it is possible to have a full battery charge in 15 minutes. Now, automakers are rushing to develop more electric automobiles as infrastructure improves. There will be over 100 models on the market by the end of 2021.

However, not all cars are available to be fast-charged and not all work the same as they need adaptors. A J1772 plug is standard for EVs, except if you have a Tesla or are attempting to utilise a Tesla EV charging station. Not every charger works with every electric vehicle. A Tesla charger will not work on a non-Tesla vehicle without an adapter. Teslas utilise their own type of connector from the device to the vehicle.

The most common electric cars come with a Level 1 charger. A 110-volt extension wire that may be plugged into a normal socket. Usually, it takes the car all night to be charged. Then, level 2 chargers use a 240-volt outlet, as with the electric dryer. This means, they frequently reduce the charging time by more than half.

Last one, Level 3 chargers, such as Tesla’s Supercharger stations and Electrify America’s universal charging stations integrated inside various gas stations and shopping malls. These use DC current to charge an electric vehicle very fast, up to 350 kW if the car can handle it.

According to Kelley Blue Book, these makes of cars are the fastest charging electric vehicles:

  1. Lucid Air – 20 miles per minute (32 km)
  2. Porsche Taycan – 15.5 miles per minute (25 km)
  3. Tesla Model 3 – 15 miles per minute (24 km)
  4. Tesla Model S – 13.3 miles per minute (21.5 km)
  5. Nissan Leaf – 12.5 miles per minute (20 km)

What is the fastest EV charger?

The electric vehicle charging technology is developing by creating a smarter, reliable and emission-free transport. The high-power chargers, among others from the ABB brand, were already developed around the world. The future of transportation will try to implement even better and faster solutions to improve life.

Many major areas now have quick chargers outside of shopping centres and workplaces, and networks of chargers are likely to start expanding along interstates. Soon people will purchase a remote charger delivered to their locations or there will even be robots charging vehicles in parking garages.
