Promieniowanie UVB r\u00f3wnie\u017c ma t\u0119 w\u0142a\u015bciwo\u015b\u0107, jednak w mniejszym stopniu. Promieniowanie UVB jest szkodliwe i mo\u017ce uszkadza\u0107 ludzkie kom\u00f3rki, powoduj\u0105c oparzenia s\u0142oneczne, a nawet raka sk\u00f3ry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W przeciwie\u0144stwie do UVC UVB mo\u017ce zaburzy\u0107 jedynie DNA kom\u00f3rki i nie jest w stanie skutecznie niszczy\u0107 mikroorganizmy.\r\nMikroorganizmy s\u0105 znacznie mniejsze ni\u017c kom\u00f3rki ludzkie, wi\u0119c aby przebi\u0107 si\u0119 przez ich struktury kom\u00f3rkowe, niezb\u0119dne s\u0105 kr\u00f3tsze fale UVC. Tymina absorbuje UVC przy okre\u015blonej d\u0142ugo\u015bci fal 253,7 nm, a \u015bwiat\u0142o UVC modyfikuje DNA na poziomie mikrobiologicznym poprzez tworzenie dimer\u00f3w tyminy. Ta modyfikacja powoduje powa\u017cne zak\u0142\u00f3cenia w replikacji mikroorganizm\u00f3w, jak r\u00f3wnie\u017c w procesach ekspresji bia\u0142ek, kt\u00f3re maj\u0105 decyduj\u0105ce znaczenie dla przetrwania kom\u00f3rek.
